They leave behind the acoustic guitars, the folk instruments, and the great atmosphere that made them great. This is a tie for my favorite black metal album of all time with Funeral Mists "salvation".
Why? Satyricon OWN the concept of brutality on this release. One of the many great things about this album is it's singularity. I noticed that there is a printing error in the logo of this release, namely the "horns" in the Y of the logo. Rebel Extravaganza is the fourth album by the black metal band Satyricon, released in 1999.

My tastes were not offended by Rebel Extravaganza -- if anything, I felt RE was timid and rather boring. The music is totally free of compromise.
Interested to buy "The Scorn Torrent" 12" that was issued with the Rebel Extravaganza LP 27361 64182. With this album they leave behind what made them famous. Data Correct I’m not going to lie to you, this album made me very worried for a while. Because this album is boring, repetitive, way too long, generic, the list goes on and on. Not only does these unorthodox elements fit right in, they also add so so much to the albums sheer momentum of force. The late 90s was a turbulent time for black, doom and gothic metal. Released as follow up to a much more classical sounding black metal album, "Rebel…" scared away many fans and enraged critics. Songs which all land around the 10 minute mark rounded with short ambient pieces.
I won't bash their other albums in this review but I will just say that Satyricon anno "Rebel Extravaganza" was a band at the absolute hight of their power, prowess and brutality.
Not only does it have an atmosphere but it invokes a much stronger feeling of limitless possibility in the listener.
This is, for me, the absolute pinnacle of Satyricons long existence. Let’s get on with the review… It's an demanding listen to say the least.
The drumming I find no fault with, but at the same time I also find very little to like, either; the blastbeats are wonderful when they appear, but too often Frost seems to be content grooving with relatively simplistic beats that don't advance the music at all, and combined with the rather erratic riffing I find after listening to RE I do not remember much of anything. Needless to say I was pleased to know that I was wrong.By the late '90s, most of the founding fathers of the Norse scene had begun to evolve in one direction or another. Satyricon is a Norwegian black metal band, formed in 1991 in Oslo.Satyr and Frost have been the band's core members since 1993. I was concerned that Satyricon, being a rather popular black metal band, was relatively UN-experimental in how they played. On the website "The Metal Archives" (which holds a lot of weight in the extreme metal community) the album only has a 52% rating out of a 100 based on 7 reviews. A completely flawless album in every sense of the word. The music itself would be 5*. I won't bash their other albums in this review but I will just say that Satyricon anno "Rebel Extravaganza" was a band at the absolute hight … The soul singers on "The Scorn Torrent" and the use of a tambourine throughout the album makes a statement. Thats what made them unique and its very sad that they didnt use any of those things on this album.Satyricon is a band every true metalhead knows, so there is no need for the introduction.
Grund genug, zum Jubiläum eine überarbeitete Version zu … “satyricon. Art Direction, Bass, Baritone Guitar, Effects, Mastered By What I'm trying to explain with all this is that "Rebel..." transcends music as a sound made by various instruments and vocals to be enjoyed by the listener. Satyricon were one of the first black metal bands to incorporate folk instruments and other thing of that nature into their black metal sound.
Fear not, there are plenty of blastbeats and blackened riffs here, and this is not Satyricon selling out. I'm not sure if it's the fact that it's been remastered or cut at 45 RPM, all i know is it is great! The best Satyricon album by far! This is simply black metal riffing mixed in with elements that seem out of place, like elements of hard rock which come out of nowhere. The point is none of the first three albums this band released were any of the words that just described this album. The previous album, If Rebel Extravaganza seems a mite fragmented in its intents, that fact rests solely on its shoulders as the 'transitional' period for the band.
Believe it or not, this Back on Black pressing is good compared to many of their other pressings.
My favorite Satyricon album (and one of my favorite albums of all time) will always be 'The Shadowthrone', drenched as it is in esoteric medievalism and folk melodies. Best viewed without Internet Explorer, in 1280 x 960 resolution or higher. Probably masterpieces like Dark Medieval Times, The Shadowthrone, and Nemesis Divina. With their 1999 release Rebel Extravaganza, they pretty much slap all of those albums in the face. Being truly brutal both in sound and atmosphere is a feat most extreme metal bands seek, but so few ever attain.
